NiftyImages and Alterable are the closest pair on this site. Both render an image at the moment an email is opened, both personalize it from merge tags, both do countdown timers and scratchers, and both work by pasting an image tag into whatever ESP you already use. The differences are in what’s included at each price, and in what each one counts when it bills you.
What NiftyImages actually is
An open-time image platform with a long feature list and a tiered way of selling it. Their pricing page sells three self-serve plans, each sized from 25,000 to 500,000 opens a month. Starter is $59 a month, or $47 billed annually, for 25,000 opens with personalized images, countdown timers, weather, custom fonts and click tracking. Growth is $149 for the same 25,000 opens and adds polls, scratchers, social signals, slides, charts and calendars. Scale is $239 and adds rule sets, A/B split tests, critical messages and two small data stores. Volume moves the price on every tier: at 500,000 opens, Starter is $549 a month and Scale is $729. Enterprise is priced on request and is where maps, external web APIs, full data stores, and the developer API and MCP live, along with onboarding and strategy calls.
There’s no free plan on the pricing page. Signing up gets a free account with “free images for testing”, no card and no time limit, but the allowance isn’t published and it’s sold as a way to test rather than a plan to send from. And NiftyImages bills per open, which is a different unit from Alterable’s impression, a point that matters enough to get its own paragraph below.
Where NiftyImages is the better buy
- Charts, calendars and image-in-image. NiftyImages renders charts and calendar widgets inside the email, and composites one image inside another. Alterable does none of those three. If a live chart in a report email is the requirement, they have it and this page doesn’t.
- External Web APIs. The feature is Data Sources, and the half that matters is the outbound one: NiftyImages calls a JSON endpoint of yours when the image is requested, passes recipient variables from the URL, and maps the response into the image, so a loyalty balance or a live price comes straight out of your system. Their own page hedges the real-time part, since responses can be cached and a polled feed serves the last fetch, and it sits on Enterprise. Alterable has no equivalent read. Data gets into Alterable the other way round, pushed through the API, the MCP server or Zapier on Pro, which keeps products and images current without anyone opening the editor and covers most catalogue, price and inventory work. If the value has to be pulled from your system at render time rather than pushed ahead of it, that’s theirs.
- More kinds of slide, and social signals. Both tools now build slideshows the same way: up to five slides in one animated GIF, each with its own timing, looped or played a set number of times, fit or fill. The difference is what a slide can be. On NiftyImages it can be a chart, a calendar, a barcode or a critical message that only shows while the alert is on, and Alterable renders none of those. Live social counts, also on their Growth tier, have no equivalent here either. Polls map to Alterable’s surveys.
If the plan is charts and calendars, or an image that pulls from your own API at render time, NiftyImages is built for it.
Where Alterable is the better buy
Three things, and the first one decides most of it.
- Nothing held back for a top tier. On NiftyImages, scratchers and polls arrive at $149 a month, rule sets and A/B testing at $239, and maps, the API and the MCP server only on Enterprise, at a price you have to ask for. On Alterable, countdown timers, dynamic images, dynamic products, local maps, surveys, scratchers and slideshows are on every plan including the free one, and so is the rules engine (one rule-based version per image free, unlimited on Pro). Pro at $49 adds A/B testing, the API, the MCP server and the Zapier integration in private beta.
- Slideshows from the free plan. Free builds slideshows from static images, and Pro adds slides that are dynamic images or products, drawn for each reader. NiftyImages starts its Slides at Growth, $149.
- A free plan you can send. 10,000 impressions a month, no branding, no card, no expiry. NiftyImages gives you free images for testing with no published allowance. If you want to prove personalization works on a real campaign before asking for budget, knowing what the free side covers matters.
Then the units, which deserve their own paragraph. NiftyImages counts opens. Alterable counts impressions, meaning each element that loads in an opened email. An email with one personalized hero costs the same on both; an email with a timer, a product block and a map costs three impressions here and one open there.
An open is measured the same way an impression is, by an image loading, so per-open billing isn’t the “only pay for what was read” deal it sounds like. Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection fetches remote content whether or not anyone reads the mail, and a recipient with images off registers neither. Run your own template through both meters before deciding the pricing table settles anything. At one image per email, Alterable Pro’s 500,000 impressions for $49 against NiftyImages Starter’s 500,000 opens for $549 is the comparison, and it isn’t close.

When a NiftyImages alternative makes sense
Start with the features that don’t exist on the other side. If you need charts, calendars, image-in-image or a live data feed into an arbitrary image, NiftyImages has them and Alterable doesn’t, and the rest of this page is moot.
If your list is closer to timers, personalized heroes, products, maps and the occasional scratch card, look at which tier each one lands on. On NiftyImages that list spans Starter, Growth and Enterprise. On Alterable it’s the free plan. That’s the case where switching is obvious.
What switching looks like
Both tools generate images rather than store them, so there’s nothing to export. Rebuild the designs you use in Alterable’s editor, recreate your merge tags, swap the image URLs in your templates, and your ESP never notices. Timers, scratchers and slides map directly, as long as each slide is a personalized image or a static one; a slide that’s a chart, calendar or barcode doesn’t. Rule sets map to Alterable’s rules engine, which reads device, location, weather, time, date and language.
Charts, calendars and image-in-image have no equivalent, so decide those first. If you’re on Enterprise for the API or MCP server, the same capabilities are on Alterable’s Pro plan at $49. The content types themselves are on the free tier, which is a reasonable place to test the migration before touching a paid plan.
Competitor figures come from each tool’s own published pricing, and prices change. Check theirs before you decide.
